Odds and Ends: Just Like the Wilpon's Finances and PR Strategy

Wilpolooza Continues...
http://i2.cdn.turner.com/si/2011/writers/tom_verducci/05/24/fred.wilpon.mets.madoff/fred-wilpon-si2.jpg

*Sports Illustrated and Tom Verducci seem to have gotten scooped in terms of Fred Wilpon bombshells. Freddy's comments on his team's finances in the SI piece are more frightening--downright dire--but his musings on his players are muted:
Speaking about the Mets' prospects of improving with a smaller payroll, Wilpon said, "If we're fortunate enough, [catcher Josh] Thole can be the kind of player we think he can be. [First baseman Ike] Davis keeps progressing. Whoever is at second base progresses as a young player. The shortstop [Reyes] -- I know there's a great question about whether we can keep the shortstop, so we're preparing for that if that should happen. [Third baseman] David [Wright] we hope gets on track. [Outfielder Jason] Bay is good guy and a professional. Pagan comes back and he's not a totally expensive guy. Beltran will be elsewhere. We hope [Fernando] Martinez can take that spot. Now, he's fragile but he can hit."
Thus far, Fred's magazine tour is going swimmingly. Looking forward to what Popular Science, Juggs and the National Review can drag out of Fred in the coming months.

*You can listen in as Jose Reyes tries to answer the media with limited English skills: "He's the boss, he can say whatever he wants." Is the team shitty? "I don't know, because we believe in each other in this clubhouse." He doesn't care for an apology and...he can't "put too much stuff in his head."

look at all the stuff i've written for you this past week!

Thanks you so much, IMFM - I feel the love and pass it back to you. But a very sad note - RIP Dana Brand. Over at Hotfoot, I won his book and really enjoyed it. Only 56 years old. A very strange week - and the Gary Carter news is bad, too. Anyway, thanks again! Let's beat up on the Philmes!

Keep in mind that these are in alphabetical order by team, so in other words, A for Arizona Diamondacks, not P for Poopyface:

    The Mets? Wilpon?

Surely the connection is only by misfiring synapses.

    Hi Jaap,
you getting back in the game? I've run this blog like the Wilpons run the Mets--into the ground. But hope springs eternal.

Hey Jaap! Yeah, IMFM - surely I thought writing a little bit about Poopyface would jump-start you, but hey, Poop Happens and obviously, you are busy with other stuff, but we ALL look forward to your triumphant return.

Anyone see the game last night? To summarize, we had a guy throw his bat into the stands, an injury, a pop up triple, a game-tying 3 run home run, 3 errors, a bases loaded dropped 3rd strike resulting in a run, a phantom touch at first base, and a game ending walk off balk in extra innings...sounds like national league baseball to me!

Seriously though, please come back. I need the hilarity and hijinx at this site to get me through the day.

    Hi,

I noticed that you posted before about a charity event for brain tumors. We are Solving Kids'Cancer here in NYC. Ike Davis is hosting a charity dinner event for us this summer. Can I send you the details of this and after you review potentially consider posting about this? It is a fantastic event with other Mets players and hosted by Linda Cohn of ESPN Sportscenter. Please email me at scott@solvingkidscancer.org so I can email you the info. Thanks so much for your consideration.

OK, the Mets not only hit a grand slam, they hit two tonight. Hell has frozen over - certainly time for some more words of wisdom from Mr. IMFM. Hope all is well!

Are you at the game in LA tonight, Mr. IMFM?

    Hi cver,
nope--i was tempted bc tickets are basically free on stubhub, but in the middle of a move so it's tv for me.

I was out at the game Monday and Wednesday. Wednesday was our mets group outing about 40 strong. You can hear us doing the let's go mets chants during the 9th inning of the Wednesday game. I was told that Gary and Ron mentioned it.

Hi Keyser. I was watching from over here and did hear you and your group - cool!! Hope all is well. The Mets held their mug pretty well in LA. Now we have to see what happens against all those other All Star pitchers, since they couldn't handle Kershaw. Glad your group is still going strong.

IMFM - I miss you! I was in Santa Monica this summer, but not on a Sunday. Almost went to see them in SD, but didn't get around to it.

IMFM - I hope you have had a good summer and will soon give out your annual awards! Jose Reyes - will he still be a Met and will we miss him, if he leaves, as much as we might have, if he'd stayed for at least 3 plate appearances?

    Hey Cver,
Well this season was a wash. I'm sorry to let you and my other reader down but think of it as a rebuilding year.I am now located in the NYC area and hope this will inspire some more posts this offseason...

Great, man! Welcome back to NYC. Hopefully, all as well, I'll be visiting there next summer and, if you'd like, we can get together and/or meet up at a game. I think this was an AWFUL season! And them keeping Warthen and extending Collins for 2013 seems quite foolish and they also are dissing Mookie, which makes me a bit sad. And then, Reyes taking himself out of the game - the Mets can never get it right. And now the Wilpons are putting in their bid for Willets Point - talk about chutzpah (hmm - makes me remember how Michelle Bachman pronounced that word). All the best this winter, sir!

  • At 12:30 PM, Blogger I.M. Forme said…

    Hey Cver,
We definitely should try to catch a game together. We can meet in a secret secured location where no one will be there to see us and compromise our identities--a nearly empty Citifield!!
